Tree vandalism angers Dunecare

THE Tweed Shire Council, Kingscliff residents and Dunecare members have been angered by recent vegetation vandalism.

Damage to trees on the southern side of Cudgen Creek near Sutherland Point includes the native tuckeroo, which plays a crucial role in dune stabilisation.

Tweed Mayor Gary Bagnall met with coastal managers from around the country last week to discuss the protection of dune vegetation, among other issues.

"To come back home to this news was extremely disappointing," he said. "The Vegetation Vandalism Policy adopted by council only four months ago was a response to this type of incident."

"Our community expects those that live here, and those that visit, to protect the fauna and flora of our shire. Our council will continue to strive to value and retain our remaining native vegetation and wildlife."

Cr Bagnall expressed his gratitude to Dunecare volunteers and others who had given countless hours to preserve the vegetation along the coast.

Kingscliff Dunecare was approached for comment.
