Tremors from earthquake felt in Tweed

AN EARTHQUAKE off the coast of Queensland has been felt in the Tweed.

Just before 9.45am Thursday, a magnitude 5.3 hit off the coast north of the Sunshine Coast.

Kingscliff resident Tania Spiers-Phillips said at first, she thought it was a truck driving past.

"I  was at home just sitting on the computer and the house shook," she said.

"It felt like a really big B double going past.

"But then it shook a bit too much sideways."

She said she'd heard a number of reports of others feeling the same thing, with one friend in Tweed Heads South watching her couch move across the room.

She said they felt the earth tremor for about 10 seconds, while her cousin in Noosa felt it for longer.

Tweed Daily News journalist Digby Hildreth said the newsroom in Tweed Heads South also shook, but no damage was done.
