Triple J disqualifies Taylor Swift from Hottest 100

TRIPLE J has officially spoken on the Taylor Swift Hottest 100 controversy.

The ABC's youth broadcaster has tweeted eight "hilarious but totally true" reasons why Swift's Shake It Off won't appear in today's annual listener poll despite a viral social media campaign.

But the link in the tweet, posted just before the start of the Top 100 countdown, quickly crashed due to overwhelming traffic.

It is now back up and details the radio station's reason for barring Swift, who would have come in at No 12 had the votes been allowed,  which include not giving in to the pressure of "trolls" and "spam" and the 13,511 times Shake It Off has been played on commercial radio since August.

Presenter Lewis McKirdy made the announcement on air, saying Swift was disqualified for "a whole range" of reasons.

The radio station's response to the controversy has been highly anticipated, with a former presenter telling ABC's The Drum that Swift would be disqualified.

That didn't stop online bookmaker SportsBet from taking bets on Swift's possible Hottest 100 placing.

A SportsBet spokesman told APN the bookmaker will refund all bets placed on Swift.

A recent Social 100 tally of all voting results shared by Triple J listeners also tipped Swift would come in at No 75.

The response on social media has been varied. While some celebrated the move, others questioned how democratic the poll is and some Swift fans vowed to tune out of the Hottest 100 in protest.
