Council updates stormwater plan
TWEED City Shire Council has drafted an update for the Tweed Urban Stormwater Quality Management Plan.
The council developed the plan in 2000 for Murwillumbah, Tweed Heads and Tweed Coast villages to ensure urban stormwater management was addressed by council and that issues were incorporated into planning, budgets and ongoing work activities.
Waterways and Coast coordinator Tom Alleston said the update would ensure a better outcome for the environment.
"The updated plan is aimed to protect and enhance aquatic ecosystems, while minimising the cost of stormwater management for all parties," Mr Alleston said.
"Objectives in the plan include more healthy ecosystems and better water quality throughout the catchment, as well practical and collaborative solutions to reduce the cost of constructing and maintaining stormwater devices."
The updated draft plan takes into account population growth in the region as well as changes in technology and understanding about stormwater treatment.
The plan is on display on Tweed Shire Council's website, at council offices in Tweed and Murwillumbah and local libraries until April 24, with public comment invited until May 8.
