TUMBULGUM was hit hard on the Australia Day weekend.

Flooding left devastation for some with homes inundated, furniture and possessions ruined and 25 cars lost or damaged.

Residents rolled up their sleeves and helped each other, but have been left saddened by the event, feeling there was not enough warning given prior to the Tweed River breaking its banks.

The SES met with residents to form a Floodsafe Committee to avoid a repeat of the incident.

"It's important for people to prepare by moving valuables to a higher level,' said SES spokesman Phil Davison.

Expressions of interest are being called for the committee with the aim to adopt response strategies, according to Mr Davison.

"We are seeking lateral thinkers with an interest in helping and supporting the community in moving forward in a constructive and positive manner," he said.

Tumbulgum businessman Geoff Butterworth said there were few warnings on the Australia day weekend.

'Some homes had over a metre of water come through," he said.

Resident of 20 years, Gary Whittaker said the community banded together and felt they would do so again in preparation for further flooding.

"Adequate warning is essential," he said.

Mr Butterworth said a siren had been suggested as a way to warn all residents.

Prospective member of the Floodsafe Committee need to be familiar with local issues, have an understanding of the SES and its role in assisting the community in floods, storm and tsunami.

They should be able to commit to the group and its aims, understand the difficulty in implementing strategies and actively participate as a team member.
