Turtles overpower CHS rivals
TWEED River High School open boys' touch side has claimed its first Combined High Schools (CHS) state titles in the competition's 29-year history.
The Turtles' dominance at Bateau Bay last week follows victory for several of the Tweed boys in the North Coast zone representative championships.
Going through undefeated in the CHS, the boys, coached by Jarrod Winter, overpowered Endeavour Sports High 7-4 in the semi-final before knocking off Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College 6-5 in the final.
In a further boost, the open girls' side finished runner-up, only losing one pool match to eventual winner Tomaree High who won the final 7-6.
Second is the highest a Tweed River High girls' touch side has finished since 1995 and touch program coordinator Chris Swaddle paid tribute to the "Turtle spirit” shown by both sides.
"This is a competition played by about 350 public schools across the state and to finish top two for a school of our size against schools who put huge amounts of funding into their sports programs is something to behold,” Swaddle said.
"(Were) proud of our players no matter what but 2016 will go down as the year we showed the state that Tweed River is a name to be remembered.”
Swaddle paid tribute to the school sport and touch programs, which helped attract quality players.
"We have the touch program and A lot of these kids have come through the sports development program,” Swaddle said.
While the majority of the girls' side will contest again next year, the school will have to look to the future for the boys with seven players from their side graduating at year's end.
"The boys' side will now rebuild so it was good for those players to get that win,” Swaddle said.
"The girls can have another crack next year.”
