Tweed athletes, coaches off to pool life saving titles
A GROUP of Tweed athletes and coaches will travel to Melbourne to compete at the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships as part of a Queensland squad.
The group will compete for a chance to become part of the Aussie Barras, which is the representative team chosen from the championships.
Competitors and coaches from the Tweed, Banora Point, Kingscliff and Gold Coast will form a local contingent travelling to the January 11-13 event as part of the Royal Life Saving Society Queensland squad.
They had a glimpse of the attention they might face when photographer Chris Lopez recently monitored their underwater movements at training.
Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club's Nicole Warne said pool rescue was something the club had encouraged its juniors to undertake for the past three years.
"Pool rescue is on the surf lifesaving calendar and a few of our juniors chose to try it and I'm proud of their efforts," Warne said.
"We had a small group competing at the Surf Lifesaving Australia Pool Rescue champs who performed very well and I'm confident those selected in the RLSSQ squad will show an improvement on their previous performances now they've had specific training sessions with Rod Jones."
Warne said the Queensland team were keen to defend their Australian title from last season.
"There is a very happy vibe within the squad and they are all looking forward to the trip to Melbourne," she said.
The Royal Lifesaving Society's aim is "Drowning Prevention".
