Tweed council begins audit of school zone safety

AN audit on the safety of local school zones has been backed by Tweed Shire Council.

Pitched by deputy mayor Michael Armstrong, roads, footpaths and pedestrian crossings will be scrutinised.

"This was a commitment made during the council election," Cr Armstrong said.

"It is extremely pleasing to deliver on it.

"It is something I am particularly committed to.

"This plan was announced with the support of former prime minister Kevin Rudd during the campaign and is a key element of my vision for the future of the Tweed Shire.

The council expects a report before the start of the 2013 NSW school year.

"Putting the needs of local families and children first is an important part of making sure that the Tweed Shire continues to reflect local needs," Cr Armstrong said.

"Our schools and our local teachers do a wonderful job in fostering a love of learning in our children and they provide a safe welcoming environment for the families of all their students.

"By conducting an audit we can make sure that everyone has equal safe access to our local schools and show clearly our community's support for the important role schools play in our community."
