Tweed council GM gives councillor the snip for charity
TWEED Shire Council deputy mayor Michael Armstrong is now bald after honouring a pledge to shave his dark locks off if a $1500 fundraising goal was realised.
Council general manager Troy Green, who is clearly an experienced razor-wielder, did the honours for Cr Armstrong in front of the crowd at Saturday's Cancer Council Relay for Life in Kingscliff.
Cr Armstrong had promised to shave his hair if council's two teams participating in the relay raised more than $1500.
They ended up far exceeding that goal with more than $2,900 raised for cancer research.
Cr Armstrong and mayor Barry Longland then teamed up on guitars to perform a couple of songs at the event staged at Cudgen Leagues Club.
More than 30 teams participated in the relay which saw participants walk around the Cudgen track from 3pm on Saturday until 7.30am on Sunday, and participate in a variety of activities throughout the two days.
So far the event has raised around $81,442 almost double the $45,000 raised at last year's event, said Cancer Council community relations organiser Yonit Kittay
"They money just keeps rolling in," a thrilled Ms Kittay said.
The final figure will be announced at the Cancer Council's award's ceremony on April 2.
