Watching out for our posties
TWEED Heads is one of the best places in the country to be a postie.
Nationwide there have been 186 motorcycle posties hit by cars reversing from driveways in the last year but our posties have been collision free.
But that's not to say we shouldn't be looking out for them.
Tweed Heads delivery manager Ray Chapman said Australia Post had been vigilant with safety measures, with a nationwide campaign I Am For Zero and bright yellow safety flags installed on postie motorcycles.
He said it was now up to the community to look out for their postie.
"They come to work, do their job, then they just want to go home to their family," Mr Chapman said.
"Keep an eye out for the postie, watch for overgrown hedges or overgrown trees that could obstruct your view when you're reversing."
Although ferocious dogs have traditionally had the mailman quaking in his boots, Tweed Heads posties are more concerned with magpies.
"The flags are a deterrent but they still sometimes try to peck up under our helmets," said team leader Darren Vickery.
"But eventually magpies get bored, they become resilient to anything, you just ignore them and they get sick of chasing us."
Mr Vickery said after spending a while delivering mail to businesses in Tweed Heads South he hoped people would get to know him and keep an eye out.
Posties will be delivering postcards to residents across the country in coming days to remind them to watch out for posties and other footpath users.
In NSW 2600 posties deliver more than 7.35 million mail articles to 2.9 million addresses each business day.
About 1100 Queensland posties deliver more than 4.28 million mail articles to 2.2 million addresses each business day.
