Tweed High looks back

TWEED River High School has played an important role in many people's lives.

This year the school will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and past students and teachers will flock home to remember the years they spent there.

On August 6 the school will be open from 2-4pm for guided tours and a display of memorabilia.

The event will also mark the opening of the school's time capsule.

A social function will also be held at Twin Towns Services Club and tickets are available through the school.

Geoff Walsh, Teresa Walsh and Makayla Riley represent three genera- tions proud to have been part of Tweed River High School's history.

Mr Walsh attended the high school from 1961-1963.

“I was class captain and had to mark attendance every day and check the uniforms,” Mr Walsh said.

“My first day was on January 31 in 1961; there were 427 students and 22 staff.”

Ms Walsh attended Tweed River High School from 1982-1987 and said she was still proud of its achievements.

“Tweed was one of the best sporting schools in the state, having students represent Australia,” she said.

Makayla is a current student and can see how the school has changed.

“There has been a complete renovation of the school with revamped laboratories, administration area, air-conditioning and whiteboards replacing chalk boards,” Makayla said.
