Tweed men's shed needs land
THE push to get a Men's Shed for Tweed Heads has gained momentum with over 80 men coming together at a public meeting this week and organisers lobbying Tweed MP Geoff Provest for land for the shed at a meeting today.
"Unless suitable land can be found to put a shed the project may be delayed," spokesman for the newly formed steering committee John Pitt said.
The group received $58,000 towards the project through NSW Government funding recently.
"While the grant means a prefabricated shed and equipment to go inside could be purchased, nothing can be started until a small block of land is made available.
"It's a catch-22.
"There's been a huge and enthusiastic response to the proposal for a men's shed here in Tweed Heads.
"But we are in limbo until we can find somewhere to put the shed.
"We are looking at a number of options, so everything is up in the air."
The Men's Shed will be a place where blokes can come and socialise, participate in craft activities and contribute back to the local community.
There is a shed running already in Murwillumbah, but that is too far for many men who live in Tweed, Mr Pitt explained.
"What we need is a kindly benefactor or guardian angel to offer us some land on very favourable terms," he said.
"We are not after much land.
"But as a not-for-profit group our funds are strictly limited."
Donations of equipment and/or tools would be gratefully accepted.
A second public meeting will be held at the South Tweed Sports Club on Wednesday, July 18 at 6.30pm to update on progress and elect a committee.
