Tweed players chase Kanga Cup glory
YOUNG soccer players from across the Tweed will unite in a bid to claim glory when they take to the field in international tournaments in Australia and New Zealand early next month.
Northern Rivers Football will field an under-10 team at the Christchurch International tournament from July 15 but before then will send an under-11 team to contest the Kanga Cup in Canberra.
The Kanga Cup is recognised as one of the biggest junior soccer tournaments in the southern hemisphere with more than 300 teams from across Australia and overseas taking part.
NR Football sent two teams to the carnival last year. The under-11 team finished eighth in their division and the under-10 team finished fourth.
Many of that under-10 team have returned this season and will be hoping to improve on their result when they line up in the under-11 division.
“Three quarters of the players are the same so we are hoping to do well,” NR Football coach Jason Wagner said.
Wagner said the players would be better prepared after participating in the tournament for the first time in 2015.
“It was a real eye-opener for them but the boys have got the experience now,” he said. “They know what to expect and are aware of the high level of football that is required.”
NR Football was established last year to provide a development pathway for young players from across the Tweed.
“The teams that we put together have players from all the clubs,” Wagner said.
