Tweed politicians get on the campaign trail

TWEED politicians now have a time frame for their campaigning after Prime Minister Julie Gillard announced the election date of September 14.

Richmond MP Justine Elliot said she would focus on her track record in the upcoming campaign.

"I stand on my record," Ms Elliot said.

"I'm proud, as the local MP, to have delivered more than $1.3 billion for roads, schools, health and community resources.

"This includes $349 million for the Pacific Hwy upgrade at Sexton Hill, $7 million for the GP Super Clinic at South Tweed, $2 million for the Murwillumbah Community Centre and $115 million for upgrades to 90 local schools.

"I stand up for locals on the issues that are important to us - like calling for a moratorium on coal-seam gas mining on the North Coast."

The Nationals candidate for Richmond, Matthew Fraser, said he had been campaigning since his pre-selection in July.

"I've been out there and talking to people and meeting people," Mr Fraser said.

"I've loved it. We've surveyed nearly every household in the Tweed and responses are still coming in, but we have received about 2000 so far."

He said the biggest issues for people this election would be border protection, the cost of living and job security.

Mr Fraser already has his image on signs across the shire.
