Tweed River Jockey Club up for major award

THE Tweed River Jockey Club is edging towards the winning post after being selected as a finalist in the New South Wales Country and Provincial Racing Awards for 2016.

The club was selected for the Outstanding Achievement Award for the success of its Summer Series of Racing meets across Christmas and New Year's on December 11 and 27 and January 3.

TRJC secretary manager Brian Charman, who has been in the role for just on two years, paid credit to the club for its hard work.

Charman said the nomination came after the club's efforts in improving trainer, jockey and patron experiences at the Murwillumbah track.

"It's been a lot of hard work improving where we could, to make those small differences for people to come along and enjoy a day at the races,” he said.

"Those three race meetings were record race meetings across NSW TAB and (set) records in terms of attendance and bar (sales).

"In an industry where we're competing with corporates and other (recreations), we've increased NSW Racing turnover and admission.

"So it's a good pat on the back for us.”

Charman, who has attended the past two awards nights in Sydney, said it was a "relief” and an "honour” to be nominated.

While joking that he hoped chairman Bernie Quinn had already written an award acceptance speech, Charman said just being nominated alongside race clubs Forbes, Moree and Taree-Wingham was great for Northern Rivers racing.

"I've witnessed the honour that goes with being nominated and the prestige for the winner,” he said.

"It's just fantastic to be in the final four, and it's a big sigh of relief to say industry recognises (us) as one of the contenders in country racing,” he said.

The winners will be announced at an awards night at the Sheraton on the Park, Sydney, on Friday, September 30.
