Tweed school marks wartime sinking of Centaur ship
CENTAUR Primary School commemorated the sinking of its namesake ship on Monday.
This week will mark 71 years since AHS Centaur was sunk by a Japanese submarine.
Centaur principal Darren Scott said the school was being built at the same time as the hospital ship's memorial at Point Danger.
Mr Scott said their founding principal, Maryann Goggins, saw a connection between the AHS Centaur's purpose and that of the new school.
He said this is reflected in the school's motto, "creating paths to success".
"It's really about offering a service that's not for your own gain," he said.
"You're there to assist others."
Following the sinking, 268 of the 332-strong medical and civilian crew died, including all but one of the 12 nurses.
Centaur Primary School commemorates the sinking of AHS Centaur annually.
