Council discovers 200kg of asbestos

About 200kg of asbestos was discovered by Tweed Shire Council as part of their annual clean up service today.

The poisonous material was found at a collection point on Sleepy Hollow Rd at Sleepy Hollow this morning.

Tweed Senior firefighter Neil King said Brunswick Heads Fire Brigade and the Hazmat team attended the scene and removed the material after being alerted by the council.

He said it was unknown if the material was dumped deliberately or accidentally.

He urged anyone who found asbestos to stay away from it, never try to touch it or pick it up, and to notify their local fire brigade immediately.
