Shire bears koala responsibility

TWEED Shire councillors decided to send a submission to the state government to classify the shire's koala populations as an endangered species.

The chamber did not enter much debate with councillors humouring each other saying they finally had an item that required no debate.

When Councillor Katie Milne said she want to talk on the item Cr Kevin Skinner quipped that his fellow councillor should not talk too long.

"Don't talk for too long or I will vote against it," Cr Skinner said.

Councillor Joan van Lieshout said she would be surprised if anyone didn't support the application to protect the shire's koalas.

The vote passed 7-0 and the gallery erupted in applause as a result.
