Tweed shire is on right road

THE NSW Government would welcome a submission from the Tweed Shire Council on road funding, a Roads and Traffic Authority spokeswoman said.

The council decided at Tuesday's meeting to ask the State Government to consider the Tweed shire as a major urban area and increase its road network funding.

It believed being close to the Gold Coast's population of more than 500,000 gave it reason to receive special consideration from the RTA.

The council wanted the State Government to fund Tweed Valley Way and Sexton Hill Dr after the completion of the Barona Point upgrade.

A council spokeswoman said money that should be going into community projects was needed for road maintenance in the Tweed.

"When a formal request is received from Tweed Shire Council the matter will be discussed and considered," the RTA spokeswoman said.

"The review would include consideration of nearby state borders and neighbouring local government areas.

"Most road classification reviews are carried out about every 10 years to ensure changes in road use are reflected in the available RTA programs and funding.

"Typically these reviews are carried out state wide so all councils in NSW have the opportunity to have their say in changes to their road networks and because a change in road classification in one council area has impacts on the funding available to every council in the state.

"The most recent NSW state wide road classification review was announced in 2003 and an extensive consultation process with councils including Tweed Shire Council started in 2004."

The spokeswoman said the review process considered more than 380 proposals from NSW councils for more than 5000 kilometres of road.

The changes to the classification were last announced in July 2009.
