Tweed singers are NY-bound
A GROUP of Murwillumbah singers has been invited to perform in New York’s Carnegie Hall – one of the world’s most famous and prestigious venues for both classical music and popular music.
The singers from the Murwillumbah Philharmonic Society along with others from the Chillingham Voices and Brisbane vocalists from the Brisbane Music Antiqua Collegii had been performing together and deeply impressed those that heard them.
The Murwillumbah group’s musical director Heather Martin said the singers had been in a choir singing the Australia premiere of world-renowned composer Karl Jenkins’ work, Gloria.
“As a result people in New York heard about it and invited the choir to perform in the premiere of The Peacemakers,” Mrs Martin said.
“There are nine of us (from the Murwillumbah Philharmonic Society) that are going to go and partake with the others in Carnegie Hall.
“Karl Jenkins will be either conducting or directing as it is a new work. How often do you get a chance to sing in Carnegie Hall or perform with a composer you respect so much?”
Mrs Martin said the concert would take place in mid-January but in the meantime the local singers will keep busy.
They have a concert on Sunday from 2pm in All Saints Anglican Church, Murwillumbah. .
