Tweed storm damage to cost council a whopping $1.3 million
STORM and flood damage to public assets reached at least $1.3 million as a result of January and February's wild weather, according to Tweed Shire Council.
"The initial assessment of damage to the shire is 1.3 million and around $800,000 of that was roads," a council spokeswoman said.
"We estimate that the unclaimable damage was around 30 to 40 per cent of that figure."
This means that damage not covered by national disaster assistance was estimated to be about $390,000 to $520,000.
Damage not covered by national assistance includes potholes, many water assets and the Murwillumbah cattle sale yards.
"Council doesn't assess unclaimable damage," the spokeswoman said.
An Insurance Council of Australia spokesman said that throughout NSW the damage bill at the start of March was $101 million, with 17,150 claims lodged.
