Tweed students get ahead with RFS cadet program
EIGHT Tweed River High School students delved into the world of fire fighting before graduating from the PCYC Emergency Services Cadet Program on Tuesday.
North Coast Rural Fire Service operational services coordinator inspector Matt Inwood said the cadet program was hugely beneficial to those involved.
He said some of the students had already expressed interest in signing up for the Rural Fire Service.
While they weren't able to get involved with live fire, Insp Inwood said the Tweed River High School students did get a good idea of some of the things involved in being and RFS volunteer.
"At the end of the day, it's about helping young people develop the life skills to help them through life," he said.
Insp Inwood said the cadet program had previously been successful in the Byron and Ballina areas.
He said the program was certainly a worthwhile means of fire safety education.
"It's been nothing short of positive," he said.
"You could see that in the way the students have engaged with the program."
Insp Inwood said he cadet program was essentially a precursor to the basic Bush Firefighter course.
He said students were taught some basic fire science, pump operation and hose rolling.
