Tweed surfer caps off strong season
TWEED surfer Kobie Enright has secured a runner-up finish in the 2016 World Surf League (WSL) Australasian Junior Qualifying Series (JQS).
In the seventh and final leg of the series, which began on the Gold Coast in January, Enright surfed well to finish second to Avoca surfer Macy Callaghan in Sunday’s final at North Cronulla Beach.
Conditions were tough for the final, with Callaghan making the most of limited opportunities in two-foot surf to post a nine-point ride (12.00 overall), leaving Enright chasing a 7.51 to win (6.75 overall), which never eventuated.
Enright’s confidence took a hit after Callaghan’s huge individual wave score, which she was unable to chase in unfavourable conditions.
“When Macy got that nine-point ride, my confidence went down a bit and I was just unable to find anything decent,” Enright said.
“But I’m still super happy with the way it all panned out.”
Enright, 16, a Rip Curl team surfer, was a child prodigy in the surf and built a strong list of titles, including the 2012 Australian Junior Surfing Championship and the 2013 Rip Curl Grom Search Series Championship.
A Snapper Rocks Boardrider, Enright grew up rubbing shoulders in the surf with Tweed surfing superstars, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and her childhood idol, Stephanie Gilmore.
The JQS runner-up finish caps off a strong 2016 season for Enright, who went on a big run in February, winning the Subway Junior Pro at Avoca, followed by a third in the Komunity Project Great lakes Pro and a second overall finish in the NIB Pro Junior in Newcastle.
Enright is building a strong platform towards a future position on the Women’s Championship Tour and is happy with her results to kick-off this year.
“I’m so stoked with the way this year panned out,” Enright said.
“Last year wasn’t great for results, so I’m happy to get to a few finals over the course of this series.”
