Tweed to win with Games

THE recent win for 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held on the Gold Coast will not only benefit the Gold Coast, but also the Tweed and Northern NSW region.

Being the nearest region to where the events are taking place, the Tweed can stand to get many benefits from the win, Northern Rivers Tourism CEO Russell Mills said.

"Tweed has probably got the best deal out of this whole situation. We get the same benefits such as tourism and exposure without the pressure of actually hosting the event," Mr Mills said.

As the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 brought in around 40,000 visitors, Tweed can expect a significant surge of supporters, spectators, participants and participants' families in the area.

"It's inevitable that we'll get a lot more visitors, people won't just stay on the Gold Coast, they'll want to look around at the surrounding areas," Mr Mills said.

"It's excellent on many levels, it builds industry confidence and gives everyone something to look forward to and work towards."

Tweed also seeks to provide the use of the many sporting facilities in the area, if not for the main event, at least training.

"The facilities from Tweed to Murwillumbah are of no doubt interest to the games coordinators and we'll probably be hosting a lot of the training camps as not everyone can use the Gold Coast's facilities," he said.

As its still early days, the main focus is on the next games in Glasgow in 2014, but Northern Rivers Tourism is still thinking of the areas presentation and the message Tweed is sending out.

"The Tweed region is all about being laid-back, the great drives and eating great food," he said.

Northern Rivers Tourism will also be working with the industry to make sure they're prepared.

"A large number of visitors will be foreign and may not speak English, so we need to make sure we've accommodated for everyone and make it the best experience for visitors we can," Mr Mills said.
