Tweed welcomes medical interns

TWEED Hospital will welcome six fresh-faced medical interns next year.

Health minister Jillian Skinner announced a record 850 intern training positions had been opened across the state, an increase of 80 positions on this year.

Tweed MP Geoff Provest welcomed the news, acknowledging the Tweed as a great place to live and work.

"There aren't many other regional centres where you can sneak in a surf before or after your shift," he said.

"We know that our area has been neglected in the past.

"It's great to see new men and women on the frontline of our local health service."

Ms Skinner said it was refreshing to see interns keen to work in regional and rural areas.

"I'm pleased to say that every NSW university medical graduate who applied for an intern position in NSW received an offer, which is fabulous for the future of this state," Ms Skinner said.

"The challenge now is to encourage them to stay on and serve these needy communities."
