TWO police officers have been released from hospital after being allegedly assaulted by a man in Cudgen this morning.

Tweed/Byron LAC Inspector Chad Deegenaars said the two male senior sergeants were checking on the man's welfare when he lashed out at them.

"The police were just going to make sure that he was okay," Insp Deegenaars said.

"He just started attacking them completely unprovoked."

Insp Deegenaars said a member of the public who'd seen the man wandering along Tweed Coast Rd called police with concern for his welfare.

The accused remained in hospital this afternoon.

"Police will probably be laying charges at a later date," he said.

Tweed/Byron LAC Superintendent Wayne Starling commended the officers, who used a Taser on the accused, for resolving the incident in such a way as to avoid further harm.
