Tyalgum Festival shining light on new indie living
TYALGUM has banded together to create a festival with an environment and sustainability focus and everybody's pitching in.
As the Tweed village prepares to go off the grid, residents want to spread the message on alternate energy solutions, wellbeing, spiritual growth as well as highlighting the arts and culture that make up a significant part of the community's heartbeat.
Beginning Friday with live music at Flutterbies Cafe, the three-day O'Heart Festival runs throughout the weekend, with a range of events before culminating in a performance by The Heart Collectors on Sunday afternoon.
Organiser Kirra Springs said the village and surrounds had banded together through a mutual passion for the environment to create the indie festival over just three weeks.
"We'd been talking about an indie festival for a while, as we were considering it further, we realised that as a village we were passionate about where the planet is at and the need for alternate energy solutions,” she said.
"We decided to go for it and make it holistic. Our lives are holistic, so we wanted to represent that and draw people to that.
"The wonderful thing about the Northern Rivers is that so many people are a wealth of resources and it's a wider community event. That's how we live and that manifests into all you get to see.”
Seven music venues will run in rotation throughout the weekend, including at Flutterbies, Celestial Dew, Tyalgum is my Tuscany, The Orpheum Bookshop, Poet's Corner and the Tyalgum Hall, with screenings of films about environmental awareness and alternate energy solutions, plus accompanying presentations and information stalls.
Handmade arts and crafts stalls will also be spread throughout the village, alongside the music venues.
"There's happy, healthy food, yoga classes and demonstrations, there'll be talks from various people offering cutting edge and environmental solutions,” Ms Springs said.
The O'Heart Festival is a plastic bag and illicit drug-free event, deeply rooted in environmental awareness.
Ms Springs said while most of the events would be free, people were encouraged to support contributors.
"Please bring a pocket full of change to support the stalls and busking circles along the way,” she said.
