Tyalgum skatepark gets a lift
TYALGUM is set to get a major facelift with almost $70,000 in funding announced towards an enhanced youth precinct and improved facilities at the Trust Public Reserve.
The funds will be used to create an expanded youth area - including new skate street equipment, improved half-court basketball facilities and playground equipment - along with additional barbecues and shelters.
The funding, including almost $50,000 from Tweed Shire Council and $20,000 from Richmond MP Justine Elliot, was announced last week and follows extended community consultation.
The consultation followed closure of the Tyalgum waste transfer station last year, shut by council due to low patronage and high costs.
Tyalgum Community Consultation chairman Mic Julien said the reserve upgrade, scheduled for completion by the end of the year, would give the community a real lift.
"This space is already used quite a lot but this will provide a great modern facility that is even more inviting for residents and visitors,” Mr Julien said.
"The playground and youth space, in particular, will be fantastic for young people.”
Mayor Katie Milne said despite a "huge uproar” after she first moved to shut the waste depot, consultation had proved positive.
"Young people will very soon have a long-lasting space to have fun, the community managed reserve will be greatly enhanced, council will save money in the long run, and this significant scenic vista will be properly honoured and help to drive economic development for the town when it's finished,” she said.
Ms Elliot said the project was a win for the community and showed "how much we can achieve when we all work together”.
