Tyler carves it up in Hawaii

SUCH an exciting end-of-year climax for the competitive surf season in Hawaii.

Australia's latest world professional surfing champion, Tyler Wright, finished the year like she started at Snapper Rocks, with another big win and this time with a maiden at Honolua Bay, Maui. Wright is a powerhouse surfing machine, knocking up five wins for the season and has her sights on next year.

Wright overcame her long-time adversary, former three time world champion Carissa Moore in the final and an important psychological win over one of the best.

"Inspiration for this event has been learning and that has been the undercurrent for everything I've done this year,” Wright said.

"There were a couple of rocky first rounds but then I pulled it together today. Honestly, Carissa and I have had eight finals together and she has gotten me in seven, which is pretty incredible.”

And it sounds like Wright is only warming up for more world titles to come.

"This event allowed me to get a block of work done to get ready for next season,” she said.

"With the title done and dusted, we were able to work on some other things which is great. Now I'll go home, have a break and spend some time with friends and family.”

Meanwhile, the men's last qualifying event for the year has been on in earnest with amazing waves at Sunset Beach for the Vans World Cup. Coolangatta's Jack Freestone is on the tightrope of re-qualifying, needing two big results to finish off with the title before the last CT of the season, the Billabong Pipeline Masters from December 8-20. Jack reached the semis at Sunset and will now be hoping for a big result at Pipe. Snapper's Joel Parkinson reached the quarter finals before dipping out.

During the Sunset event, Pipeline was perfect in the 8 to 10ft range and all eyes will be watching the finals from Thursday, December 8.

There is a huge swell forecast for the following week and every possibility that Eddie Big Wave event dedicated to Hawaiian Legend Eddie Aikau will be on in 20 to 30ft surf!

While John John Florence wrapped up the world title prior to the Hawaiian season, the new world champ was on target to wrap up the prestigious Hawaiian triple crown having won the opener at Haleiwa.

However, the favourite North Shore surfing son has left the door open with an uncharacteristic round four defeat at Sunset which now means the triple crown trophy will be decided at the Pipe.

Back on Australian shores there was good news for Snapper's Jaggar Dean Bartholomew who placed fourth in the U16 Australian Junior Titles at Cat Bay, Phillip Island.

By making the top four in his division. Jaggar has earned his place in the Australian team and a crack at a world title in the WISA junior games in 2017.

His famous dad, Rabbit Bartholomew, was made aware of the news on his 61st birthday. "It was the best birthday present ever, so stoked and proud for him,” said an elated Bugs.

It was 44 years ago that Rabbit and I shared plane seats on the way to California in the Australian team headed for the world titles in San Diego. Seems like yesterday.
