Underage drinking blitz
MINORS bragging about underage drinking on social media have triggered a strong response from police in the lead up to Schoolies Week celebrations.
Tweed Byron Local Area Command Acting Inspector Mal Kentwell said underage purchases of alcohol and adults acting as suppliers were offences and police would "crack down".
Act Insp Kentwell said a Juvenile Drinking Initiative was in planning for the Tweed-Byron LAC with Byron Bay the main target during schoolies.
"The area is always prevalent with people from Sydney and interstate and the general target will be underage drinking, second supply in which adults provide alcohol for minors and, of course, the fake-ID aspect.
"Over previous years we've discovered significant numbers of fakes and we'll be looking to get Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing Inspectors up here this year."
He said this year as previously numbers would be "bumped up" for post-graduation celebrations, though underage drinking offences were always targeted.
"Police will be looking to crack down, not only on minors consuming alcohol but suppliers such as parents or adult friends."
