US beat Aussies in semi-final
THE Australian women's water polo team has failed to move through to the gold medal match after a dramatic extra-time 9-11 loss to the United States.
In a tight match, the Americans seemed to have the game wrapped up with a second on the clock, but a late penalty took the game into extra-time.
However, the United States proved too strong, winning with two early extra-time goals.
The Australians flew out to a two goal lead at the start of the match, but the United States' team clawed its way back before establishing a two goal lead of its own.
The last quarter saw the Australians start a goal behind, but despite a better showing in front of goal, still trailed by the solitary goal with one attack left in the game.
Laying siege to the Americans' goal, the Australians somehow, in a sea of arms and legs, earn't a five metre penalty with a second on the clock.
However, extra-time gave little reprieve for the Australian's, the United States moving through to meet the winner of Hungary versus Spain.
Australia will meet the loser in the bronze medal match.
