USA is on the way

THE USA swimming team has announced it will train for the upcoming World Championships on the Gold Coast.

Mayor Ron Clarke announced the decision yesterday and said the news was a glowing endorsement of the city’s sporting facilities.

World famous athletes such as Michael Phelps and Melissa Franklin will be part of the 80-person group, who will train from July 12-20.

Gold Coast council staff toured the Miami and Southport city pools with the USA international games executive this week.

“To have the USA swimming team training at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre is truly exciting news for the Gold Coast. It supports what residents already know, which is that we have world-class sporting facilities that are recognised beyond our shores,” Cr Clarke said.

“What won them over, and this is in their words, was our beautiful weather, happy people and great pools. This is certainly a glowing endorsement of our sporting facilities, friendly community and a perfect climate.”

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid chairman Mark Stockwell said the US team was one of the strongest swimming squads in the world.

“To have the US team train here represents a great opportunity and says so much about the destination. Their choice is indicative of our quality facilities and the Gold Coast’s capability to host international teams.

We will provide them with the ultimate in conditions and services to maximise their training efforts,” Mr Stockwell said.
