Usain no longer an A-League bolter
USAIN Bolt doesn't lose often, which is why Ladbrokes bookmakers are reasonably confident he'll win an A League contract and be in action for the Central Coast Mariners come round one.
While some believe this is nothing more than a gimmick, the world's fastest man is rated a $3 chance to make the Mariners' starting line-up for their opening round match, in from $5 when Bolt and the Central Coast club's dalliance first made headlines less than a month ago.
"Clearly we all need to start taking this thing a little more seriously and $5 into $3 is a fair indication the bookies are doing so," Ladbrokes spokesman Roger Oldridge said.
Bolt is also rated a $3 chance to come on as a substitute in round one.
For those who have the same level of confidence about Bolt as the man himself does, Ladbrokes has him at $9 to score a goal in the opening match and $101 to find the back of the net three times or more.
"There are conflicting reports regarding his football ability, but one feels we are all about to find out soon given how many cameras are likely to be around for his opening training session later this month," Oldridge said.
"We should probably have an over/under line on that one."
The eight-time Olympic gold medallist is rated a $2.25 chance to score at some point during the A-League season, $51 to score a hat-trick in that time and $201 to be the league's top goal scorer.
Among other markets, Bolt is $17 to be sent off and $151 to play for the Socceroos at some time in the future.
"My thinking is, if he was to reach a qualification point for an Australian national team, sporting chiefs might prefer he make the athletics squad," Oldridge said.
