Vandals attack councillor's office

VANDALS smashed an office window of an outspoken Tweed Shire councillor on Saturday night.

Security guards called Joan van Lieshout at about 8.30pm to tell her that her office window at Wharf Central, Tweed Heads South was smashed. She then contacted police about the incident.

Cr van Lieshout said it was a mystery as to why her office was targeted but she said her role on the council could have motivated the attack.

"The window was thick so if it was smashed accidentally it would have to be a pretty rough fight," she said.

"From what we have seen it appears that nothing has been taken and we have laptops in there.

"I want to know why it was done.

"If this was an attack trying to intimidate me, then it's not going to work.

"If there was a popularly-elected mayor then right now I would run for it.

"I don't think the Tweed has been freed from its past and I would work hard to let the Tweed be its own."

Cr van Lieshout has been vocal on several contentious issues in chambers in the last few months, including debate on the Byrrill Creek Dam proposal. Most recently Cr van Lieshout had asked for an investigation into complaints about Tweed Shire Council's staffing that were delivered in a confidential report from developer, Leda.

"Some people call me a stooge to Leda, but I will ensure that transparency and integrity is upheld," she said.

"This is a complaint that alleges serious concerns on the staffing of council.

"I believe as a councillor that the mandate given to me is to represent the community was as I indicated when I ran in the last council election as standing for integrity and accountability.

"The recent reports from Leda in regard to 'alleged breaches of the code of conduct' in regard to the staffing of the Tweed Shire have been brought to our attention and I take my position as a councillor to be advised by the general manager that there is a transparent and accountable process being undertaken." Cr van Lieshout said she was the only councillor to take this stance on the issue.
