Vandals hit development site
IN THE wake of Cabarita Youth Service closing its doors, a wave of vandalism has seen windows smashed and obscene graffiti appear at the site designated for the new Woolworths complex at Cabarita Beach.
A billboard advertising the retail development project has been marred by anti-Woolworths slogans and obscene drawings and the windows of the former motel, pizza shop and auto centre have been smashed and splattered with liquid.
"It's a shame to see such aggression," said manager of Tweed Coast Demolition and excavations, Tye Ruddy.
Mr Ruddy was onsite today to begin preparation for demolition on Monday.
"These kids have made the site into a real eyesore," he said.
Locals say they are appalled at the vandalism.
"I don't know what they are trying to prove," said Cabarita resident Liam Munday.
"I hope they don't have plans to continue their vandalism on the new complex.
"That would be tragic and very dumb."
The Bogangar Auto Centre, old post office which has housed the Cabarita Youth Service for two years, pizza shop and motel will succumb to a bulldozer next week as way is made clear for a state-of-the-art shopping complex.
Brisbane development company Stockwell will build the $14 million mixed-use complex along with partner Cabarita Property Investments.
The complex will be anchored by a Woolworths supermarket and will have 3400sq m of retail space at ground level topped by 40 apartments.
