Vandals smash history
HISTORIC stained glass windows that used to delight diners at 561 Alphadale cafe restaurant in Goonellabah have been smashed.
Chef/owner Peter Fleming said vandals smashed six of the 11 leadlight windows on Sunday night.
"It's unsettling and not very nice," he said.
"I can't work out how they got up there to do the damage because the windows are very high up," he said.
"There are no bricks or iron bars or pieces of wood left around the restaurant near the windows.
"But they are pretty trashed."
Mr Fleming said he believed many of the multi-coloured windows dated from before 1900.
"They can be repaired to an extent but they are irreplaceable," he said.
"I expect the damage bill to be up to $5000."
Mr Fleming said the business had generated considerable goodwill in the three years that he had owned it.
"We have no disgruntled employees that I know of," he said.
"So it is disturbing to think people are coming out here looking for trouble. It is certainly of concern."
Mr Fleming said that the venue had recently gained a favourable entry in The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide.
