Vandals trash VMR building
THE Volunteer Marine Rescue clubhouse at Duranbah Beach has been attacked by vandals, leaving a path of destruction including broken windows and graffiti.
The damage, reported to VMR volunteers on Thursday morning at 11am, is thought to have occurred on Wednesday evening.
NSW Marine Rescue Point Danger commander Bernie Gabriel said the vandalism is frustrating to volunteers who selflessly devote many hours to the service
“There are broken windows where rocks have been thrown through them and graffiti on the windows,” Mr Gabriel said.
“They have also pulled all the branches and leaves off the tree.
“The police have been to inspect the damage and the vandalism.”
Mr Gabriel said he was hoping somebody in the area may have information on the vandals' attack or may have seen the incident occur.
“Perhaps somebody in the area has seen something,” Mr Gabriel said.
“There is a street light in front of the clubhouse where the branches were pulled off the trees, so the area would have been lit up.”
Mr Gabriel said this is not the first time the VMR clubhouse has been the target for vandals.
“This is the third time the building had been broken into or vandalised in the past two years,” Mr Gabriel said.
“Everybody gets upset, because we are all volunteers who give our own time.
“There is just no excuse for vandalism.”
Mr Gabriel said the clubhouse did have an active alarm system but it did not alert the members to the disturbance.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that might assist police is urged to contact Tweed Heads Police Station via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
