Vardy set to remain with Leicester

FOOTBALL: Jamie Vardy has announced he has rejected a move to Arsenal by agreeing a new four-year contract with Premier League champion Leicester, despite claiming to be fully focused on England’s Euro 2016 campaign.

Vardy, 29, will sign his new contract at the King Power Stadium when he returns to the club following his involvement with England in France.

England plays Iceland early Tuesday morning (Australian time).

In a statement Leicester said: “Jamie will continue to focus all of his efforts on trying to achieve success with the England team at the European Championships in France.”

With Roy Hodgson having made it clear before the tournament that he expected all players to focused firmly on England duty while in France, the revelation of Vardy’s new deal came as a surprise to the FA hierarchy in Chantilly, who were only made aware of the agreement following a call from Leicester on Thursday.

Vardy, having been given time off by Hodgson in the build-up to the tournament to marry his wife, Rebekah, had insisted only last weekend that he would not be distracted by speculation surrounding his future while away with England.

“It’s easy,” Vardy said. “We’re here for England. There is only one thing you want to do and that is to play football to the best of your ability.

“If you let things start distracting you, then you’re not going to be able to do that, which will then jeopardise the team as well.

“So everything gets completely blanked out except for England, England, England.”
