VEGOS ONLY: Monk bans meat eaters from renting house

HIS three bedroom, one bathroom home in Bayswater is advertised for rent, there's just one catch.

The home will only be offered to vegan, or vegetarian (at the very least) applicants… meat eaters need not apply.

Why? The man in charge of leasing the home is a Hare Krishna monk, Shree Radharaman.

And his Gumtree ad has caused quite the stir.

Mr Radharaman, who is a monk and tour guide at the Sacred India Gallery, has been acting as a property manager for a friend, and says he only has one simple rule when it comes to leasing the property.

"We stay true to what we feel is important, we don't place any requirements on anyone's beliefs or the way they live their life, other than we request that the house be vegetarian or vegan," he said.

Since placing the ad, Mr Radharaman said he had had a few confused callers and been accused of discrimination.

"I did have one incident where someone phoned me up, who didn't want to rent the house but he wanted to express his rejection to the ad we were running and he wanted us to take it down," he said.

But the ad is staying put, he said the house had previously been rented to vegetarians and vegans for 10 years without too much fuss.

The Hare Krishna movement believes in non-violence and service to God.

They avoid meat, fish and eggs because they believe "the preparation and eating of food should be based on principles of compassion, non-violence and balanced living".

The movement created Hare Krishna Food for Life Inc - an Australia-wide vegetarian non-profit food relief organisation. The charity helps people going through tough times by offering low cost and free meals at its Govinda Restaurants.

The movement says their "food is vegetarian to help save the environment, avoiding unnecessary cow and animal slaughter, which is the prime cause for deforestation, harmful methane gas production and contamination of our water resources on the planet".

How will he monitor the rental request, well, he said it just comes down to respect and trust.
