Eating vegetables while young cuts breast cancer risk
YOUNG women who chow down on broccoli, artichokes and peas could be warding off breast cancer.
A Harvard University study of 44,260 women found there was a 19% lower risk of contracting the disease for those who consistently ate high fibre vegetables when they were young compared with those who did not.
AUSVEG, which represents more than 9000 Australian vegetable growers, welcomed the findings.
"This research goes to show that what children and young adults eat during this formative period of their lives plays an important role in lowering the risk of health problems later in life and highlights the importance of encouraging children and young adults to meet their daily vegetable needs," AUSVEG spokeswoman Dr Jessica Lye said.
