Victory wins race to sign Roar star

FOOTBALL: Besart Berisha is the A-League player every-one loves to hate, including Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat.

But the volatile Albanian, who has scored 41 goals in just 65 games since joining the Brisbane Roar at the start of the 2011/12 A-League season, will soon be welcomed with open arms in Melbourne after signing a two-season marquee player deal with the Victory yesterday.

And Muscat said he could not wait to start working with a player who has given him so many problems.

"Besart has been performing at the highest level week-in, week-out for Brisbane and has caused plenty of headaches for opposition defenders and coaches, including myself," Muscat said.

"He's a proven goal-scorer and a player that we can't wait to welcome to Melbourne Victory."

Berisha's shock switch came after Brisbane lobbied the FFA last week to pay the 28-year-old outside the salary cap next season to accommodate his request for a pay rise.

Brisbane coach Mike Mulvey said he was disappointed but not surprised that Melbourne had swooped on the former Golden Boot winner.

"With the salary cap we have in this league, the ins and outs of players are a fact of life," Mulvey said.

Berisha will remain with the Roar for the remainder of the 2013/14 season.

He is unavailable for tomorrow night's home game against Wellington after being sent off for two bookings in last Friday's 0-0 draw with Perth Glory.

Melbourne also announced yesterday that UAE club Baniyas had withdrawn its offer to buy Vic-tory captain Mark Milligan.
