Volunteers recognised at Red Cross 20th anniversary

RED Cross volunteers were recognised at a special luncheon held on Friday.

Richmond MP Justine Elliot gave out certificates as members celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Community Visitors Scheme.

Judy Gittoes was one of those honoured for almost 20 years of service, having visited Ivy Stanners for 19 of those years and a year before that visiting another client of the scheme.

"I love this part of my life," she said.

"When you belong to a community, it's important to give something of yourself."

She said hers was a "labour of love."

Mrs Stanners is bedridden and was diagnosed as being "terminally ill" 19 years ago.

"Just shows what love can do," Ms Gittoes said.

Mrs Stanners said she loved Ms Gittoes.

"The love she gives out is amazing," she said.

"She's the best thing God ever put breath in to."
