WA leads way at national champs
WESTERN Australia is leading the Under-13 National Hockey Championship after two days of play at Murwillumbah's Barrie Smith Fields.
The Westerners are undefeated after two games and are on top of the table on six points.
New South Wales and Victoria are equal second on four points, with both having won and drawn a game.
Western Australia beat Northern Territory 2-1, then took care of Tasmania 4-0.
New South Wales beat Northern Territory 7-0, but then drew with Victoria 1-1.Victoria got its win over South Australia, 2-1.
Tasmania is fourth, ahead of Queensland and South Australia.
Northern Territory (seventh) and ACT (eighth) round out the placings.
Each team still has five games remaining, so the competition is still wide open.
The event, which has brought about 100 children to Murwillumbah from across Australia, was officially opened by Tweed Shire Mayor Barry Longland on Saturday.
It is the first time an under-13 championship has been held, and the first time Murwillumbah has hosted a national event.
