Toowoomba on track to host national event every week in 2015
WAGNERS director John Wagner has challenged Toowoomba to host a national-level tourist event every week of next year.
Wellcamp Airport is due to open its first regular passenger flights in October, providing the perfect opportunity to capitalise on an influx of tourists.
An informal working group led by Cr Geoff McDonald has been set up by Toowoomba Regional Council to make the plan a reality.
"I issued the challenge for all the participants in the room to step up to the plate and make a goal to have one national event in Toowoomba every week in 2015," Mr Wagner said.
"There are already 15 or 20 of them here and there's a great opportunity to really step up our efforts to make Toowoomba a destination.
"What we have to do is promote ourselves.
"When you look at the events we already have in Toowoomba, they are huge but they don't get their true recognition.
"I can't see why can't run a national event in Toowoomba every week next year."
Cr Geoff McDonald said it was an achievable goal.
"There is huge potential for packaging of various events such as conferences and sporting events along with tourist attractions to market this area to a broader audience."
A push to increase visitor numbers to the city has already resulted in four major sporting events scheduled for Toowoomba next month.
The city will host a National Rugby League pre-season trial, a Super Rugby trial, the 2014 Queensland PGA Championship and the Oceania Road Cycling Championships within weeks of each other.
The St George Queensland Reds will start their 2014 Super Rugby campaign with a pre-season match against defending-champions the Waikato Chiefs on Saturday, February 8 at the Toowoomba Sports Ground.
A week later, the PGA Tour of Australasia will return for the 2014 Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship to be played at the City Golf Club on February 13-16.
A NRL trial between the Gold Coast Titans and North Queensland Cowboys - the first top-flight rugby league clash in the city for seven years - will be held on Saturday, February 22 at the Toowoomba Sports Ground.
Toowoomba will also host the Oceania Road Cycling Championships on February 21-23 with an individual time trial on the Friday and road races on Saturday and Sunday.

remember Toowoomba hosted a country music day at the showgrounds a few years ago. Was a great family event with artists like Adam Brand, Becci Cole, Gina Jeffreys, plus more. It was a great event for the whole family. Should be more of them.
