New Uki hotel waiting to rise from the ashes after fire
LONG-suffering Uki business owners are growing impatient for construction to start on a new Mt Warning Hotel to replace the heritage-listed structure which burnt down in February 2013.
The plans for a new one-storey $2 million colonial style pub were lodged on December 6.
It will replace the much-loved two-storey Queenslander-style 99-year-old pub which was the village's social hub drawing big crowds especially on the weekends.
Residents had hopes Tweed Shire Council would approve the plans at this month's meeting.
But a council spokesman said it would now likely be reported to the May planning committee meeting.
"A report is currently being prepared while we obtain more information from the applicant," the spokesman said.
Uki Takeaway owner Lorraine Ratjens said residents hopes for some long-overdue good news this month had been dashed.
"I just don't understand what the hold-up is," Ms Ratjens.
"The plans look amazing.
"We were all getting excited.
"Our takings are down 30-40% since the pub closed.
"We've gone from nine staff to four.
"The weekend used to be our best trading days.
"Now they're our worst."
Uki Supermarket owner David Kirkman said: "It's just dragging on and on."
Mr Kirkman said his weekend trade had been a "disaster" since the pub burnt down.
Newsagent co-owner Lyn Messing said no matter what was proposed the plans for the pub were unlikely to satisfy everyone.
"We can't replace the building we had," Ms Messing said.
"We just need a community place to meet.
"We'll put the character back in it.
"All we want is our pub back. The publicans Geoff and Lizzie Brown are currently overseas.
What's planned for the new Mt Warning Hotel:
Single-story building with bar, indoor/outdoor dining, gaming room, bottle shop and kitchen.
Same footprint as the previous structure, but with a wider frontage
Stage one - Removal of the existing structures, construction of a new pub and internal driveway access
Stage two - Construction of motel with six rooms.
