Walker to give boost to Seagulls
HEADED by noted flyer Shannon Walker, the Tweed Heads Seagulls will have no shortage of firepower when they come up against Souths Logan Magpies tomorrow at Davies Park in the Queensland Cup season-opener.
The Seagulls upped the ante in the player market during the off-season, securing the services of Rod Griffin, Josh Starling, Aaron Cannings and Matt King.
While he's happy to have bolstered his ranks, coach Ben Anderson said tomorrow's clash involved a lot of unknowns.
“The Magpies are the only feeder for the Raiders, whereas the Titans have three feeders, not just us,” Anderson said.
“A lot of it is unknown.
“We don't know the line-up so we're just going to focus on what we're doing.
“First few rounds you never know what to expect.
“But the boys are excited and they're in good form.”
Adding spice to the contest, King will line up against former Magpies team mates.
Traditionally a hooker, King has been named at five-eighth to partner skipper Brad Davis in the Seagulls halves.
The pair will feed one of the most dangerous backlines in the league, with electric fullback Walker set to explode alongside lightning wingers Nat Barnes and Dom Peyroux, while James Wood and Kingi Akoula muscle up in the centres.
Souths Logan coach Mark Beaumont has shown his faith in young fullback and Ipswich livewire Wes Conlon to meet the Seagulls head-to-head.
Conlon, who starred for Swifts in the Ipswich Rugby League in 2010, was recommended to the Magpies by Albert Talipeau, the current Swifts coach and former Souths Logan premiership-winning utility. Conlon is part of a backline that includes Raiders-contracted Drury Low, James Stuart and Reece Robinson.
Kick-off is at 3pm.
