Watch as a snake eats a possum alive

A SNAKE catcher who operates on the Darling Downs has snapped a horrible yet mesmerising series of photos of a snake eating a possum alive.

Snake Catchers Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Toowoomba photographed the moment a snake gobbled a living possum east of Toowoomba.

Possums are a major part of the carpet python's diet.

"It is amazing to watch these incredible creatures catch and eat their food while hanging in a tree with no hands," snake catcher Lana Field said.

Toowoomba is rife with snakes at the moment, the snake catcher said.

"This season it's not a matter of more eastern browns but the ones around Eastern Queensland are larger in size," she said.

"Wet weather slows things done, expect a bit of an explosion when the heat comes out again."
