Wedding was real surprise

A WEDDING at Wintersun with an Elvis impersonator as the celebrant came as a surprise to everyone.

Even for the bride.

Rachel Azzopardi only found out about the secret arrangement for her Saturday morning wedding two hours before she tied the knot on the footpath in Marine Parade, Coolangatta, with partner and organiser Warren, in front of their cherished 1962 Dodge Phoenix.

The happy couple drew a large crowd of onlookers as celebrant and Gold Coast Elvis impersonator Dean Vegas led the unique cere- mony outside Outback Jacks about 9am.

The new Mrs Azzopardi said she never expected to be married by Elvis.

“I knew Warren and I were going to get married one day, but I didn't know where or when,” Mrs Azzopardi, 38, said.

“I went to the car park with my friends about 7am on Saturday thinking we were going for breakfast, and they pulled out the wedding outfit I had picked out months before. That's when I found out I was getting married in a couple of hours.

“I lost my appetite and found my nerves at the same time.”

Mr Azzopardi said it was not easy planning the wedding, let alone keeping it secret.

“My secret to keeping a secret - don't tell anyone,” the 45-year-old said.

“I've been planning it all since January, and only four people knew about it, including myself.”

Mr Azzopardi said the Wintersun wedding in front of their classic car held sentimental value to the happy couple, who first became a couple at the rock 'n' roll nostalgia festival five years ago.

“The car is part of the family and we've brought it to every Wintersun. It had to be included in the wedding,” he said.

“We even signed our wedding certificates in the boot because we needed a hard surface to write on.

“Wintersun for us is the wedding and the honeymoon combined. We both love it here.”

Following the wedding, the couple led the street parade down Marine Parade from North Kirra to Greenmount in a 1934 Ford Tourer.

The newlyweds will head home to Maryborough today.

Mr Vegas said it was the first wedding ceremony he has performed at Wintersun.
