Weed warning for region
TWEED residents need to be on the lookout for a plant that would have "catastrophic" consequences if it took hold in the region, according to a weed expert.
Far North Coast Weeds FNCW weed services manager Jim Willmott said Siam would be worse than the impact of camphor laurel in the region.
"It will grow here, because it grows where lantana grows. In many countries it has outgrown lantana," Mr Willmott said.
"There have been four or five outbreaks of Siam found in far north Queensland, and there is a concern that people travelling up and down the coast will inadvertently bring the seed to northern NSW."
Mr Willimott said it had a fast growth rate (up to 20 mm a day) and prolific seed production (87,000 seeds a plant).
