Weights the winning therapy for ploughing through disorder

STUDENT Matthew Leitch believes weights training is what keeps him sane when his medical problems get him down.

The Toowoomba man has now set his sights on a 20 kilometre endurance obstacle course, known as Tough Mudder.

Mr Leitch is training hard to complete the course in August despite the challenges of fibromyalgia, a nervous system disorder, which gives him a constant stabbing pain in his shoulder.

It is accompanied by chronic fatigue syndrome.

"(Fibromyalgia) is one of those things that it's not easy to just bounce back on - it could be gone in six months, it could be a lifetime," Mr Leitch said.

"Going to the gym is one of the therapies they recommend, to get through the pain, and get through the mind fog that you end up having."

He has been working out at Jetts Fitness for months, and is planning to enter an all-natural fitness and physique competition next year.

"I just made it a point that no matter how I felt, I'd come to the gym - just to keep my sanity, basically.

"Because there are days you wake up, and you're so depressed because you're in so much pain all the time.

"If I didn't have an end goal, I'd probably give up, and let the condition win.

"But for at least this hour I'm in the gym, I feel fantastic."
